Dietary requirements and allergens.
Gluten intolerance/coeliac disease: Due to having a family member with coeliac disease, we’d like to state that we take the cross-contamination measures very seriously, however, we cannot guarantee it. We are yet to be coeliac endorsed.
Vegetarians and Vegans: Most of our dishes are beef and chicken dominated. Due to the slow cooking process, we cannot prepare a veg/vegetarian version for you with short notice or on the spot. However, upon prior request (at least a day) we can cook a veg/vegetarian version of most of our dishes solely for you, substituting the beef or chicken with certain vegetables or our plant based meatballs.
Nut, fructose, & other allergies: Here at Kitchen 55 we try our best to take the cross-contamination measures seriously, however, we cannot guarantee it. With that said, for the love of food, & the tasty Persian cuisine our aim is to cater for everybody without having to sacrifice the taste of our dishes. We use onion in the process of cooking/frying/marinating most of the beef & chicken that would then be added to our stews or served alongside our rice dishes. However, we still might be able to skip the process for you if applicable.
Walnuts, Pistachios & Almonds: Apart from Walnuts that are the main ingredient for Anar bij & Fesenjoon & zeytoon parvarde (marinated olives), Pistachios & Almonds are mainly used as a garnish for our rice dishes, these could easily be avoided, just make sure to let us know about your allergy (if the dish is garnished with pistachios & almonds), & with extra care, we make sure to skip the garnishing process for you, use uncontaminated utensils etc.
Pistachios and Almonds are crucial ingredients for 2 of our desserts, saffron rice pudding & our saffron ice cream & cannot be extracted unfortunately (unless a batch was completely made for you upon prior request).
If you have any questions or dietary requests feel free to give us a ring, email us, or simply just DM us on Instagram :-)
Bookings and House rules
Dine-in and bookings
If you’re visiting for the first time, it’s noteworthy that we are a small restaurant with less than 30 seats. We have been trying to expand our sitting capacity by adding a very cosy outdoor sitting area for the past 2 years, however due to multiple issues considering the land orientation and accessibility limitations because of the out dated structural design of the building, it has been almost impossible to meet the modern regulations, thus we have been unable to obtain a building permit. We haven’t given up though, we are still trying different avenues to fix these issues and expand.
In this case, with limited seats, our bookings currently run for 90 minutes for each table. We would love to have you for much longer, and if possible we’d let you know that you can have the table for an extended time.
If you require more than 90 minutes for your booking, please get in touch with us directly, and if we do have a longer window for your booking, we extend your time.
We kindly request your prompt arrival for your own convenience and also to avoid any unnecessary complications through our bookings. We do have a 15 minute grace period for each booking, if we are not informed regarding your late arrival, we might allocate your table to another party after the 15 minute grace period.
Please, Please, Please let us know if you cannot attend your booking. Due to having a small venue and limited seats, your table could go to another group very quickly. Please show some common courtesy and give us a call to cancel your booking.
For bookings of 6 and over, please call or book here: (03) 9846 1461 OR info@kitchen55melbourne.com
Liquor license/ serving alcohol
Unfortunately, our alcohol license is awaiting the building permit mentioned in the previous section. The problem is the lack of direct access to the restrooms. The building retains a single, small restroom from its prior use as a fish and chips establishment. Since renovating, our plan has been to build new bathrooms at the rear of the property. We discovered, after starting the restaurant and liquor license applications, that to serve alcohol, we needed to officially establish the building as a restaurant (it was always a takeout) and provide direct access to restrooms. We were, however, in the midst of applying for a planning and building permit. Since then we have obtained a planning permit from the council. The outstanding building permit is currently preventing the finalisation of our liquor license application (submitted 2023) and the start of the second phase of renovation for the outdoor sitting area and new toilet facilities, a situation that has persisted for a year and a half. There have been multiple hiccups along the way, which we have managed to overcome. And for the past 6 months we have been trying to find a safe and appropriate access to the disabled restroom (wheelchair access). Due to the age of the building, and the old design, meeting outdated regulations, our new construction ideas have failed to meet the new regulations so far, and that is where we are currently, trying to
The younger ones
Children are welcomed to Kitchen 55, and we would like to ask the parents to make sure that the children stay seated for both their safety and ours as we are carrying hot food and trays of dishes throughout the night. We do not have a kids menu, as we believe our food is all age friendly, and we cannot allow outside food of any sort in our restaurant (Unless it is a dietary requirement (Baby food etc.) , if your children are picky eaters, simply make sure that they’re fed before your booking, or exclude them from the booking for your own peace of mind. Additionally, it is important to note the rare instances in which a younger child may exhibit excessive noise, such as screaming or crying. While we acknowledge that children may be noisy for various reasons, we kindly request that parents consider the comfort of our other guests and address the issue promptly.
